Blue Mountains Stargazing with an Astronomer
1 to 4 hours
Overview
This is a small-group stargazing session in the Blue Mountains, away from Sydney’s city lights. You’ll spend the evening with Dimitri, an astrophysicist with observatory experience, learning about the Southern sky and spotting celestial features through professional-grade telescopes and binoculars. It’s a good pick if you want a different kind of night activity and are happy to pay a bit more for expert guidance rather than a basic self-guided lookout visit.
Why backpackers love it
If you’re in the Blue Mountains for a short stay, this is an easy way to do something memorable at night without organising your own gear or driving around looking for a dark-sky spot. The expert guide adds real value here, especially if you want more than just a quick look up at the stars. The included blankets, hot chocolate and accessible setup also make it a straightforward option for mixed groups.
What to expect
The experience takes place around Wentworth Falls lookout, which has wide views over the Jamison Valley and a strong sunset vantage point before the sky gets fully dark. Once conditions are right, the session focuses on the stars and other night-sky highlights visible from the Southern Hemisphere, with commentary from your guide and time using the telescope and binoculars. Warm blankets and hot chocolate are included, which helps once the temperature drops. The tour is wheelchair accessible, and prams, strollers and service animals are allowed. One practical thing to know: bookings are non-refundable, and if you haven’t received an email by 1 pm on the day, the tour is confirmed.
