Convicts and The Rocks Walking Tour

1 to 4 hours

Overview

This is a history-heavy walking tour through The Rocks, focused on Sydney’s colonial beginnings and the rougher stories that shaped the area. Led by a local crime historian, it covers around 20 sites over 2.5 hours, with a mix of storytelling, research and historic images to help bring the past into focus. If you want more than a basic wander around old buildings, this gives you proper context on convicts, soldiers, sailors, rum and rebellion.

Why backpackers love it

It’s a good option if you want to understand Sydney beyond the harbour photos and do something a bit more grounded in local history. The small group size means it should feel more conversational than a big tourist walk, and the central location makes it easy to fit into a day of sightseeing. It’s not a cheap throwaway activity, but for travellers who like stories, old neighbourhoods and a guide with real subject knowledge, there’s solid value in it.

What to expect

The tour starts with early colonial landmarks including Customs House and Macquarie Place, before heading into the laneways, ruins and backstreets of The Rocks. Along the way, your guide shares stories of convicts, craftsmen and criminals, using maps, portraits and old imagery to show how the area once looked. There’s also a visit below street level to a sandstone cellar linked to the gold-rush period. The walk finishes in the heart of The Rocks, close to heritage pubs, cafes, galleries and the Saturday market. Most of the route is flat, but there are some unavoidable stairs, and tours run in all weather.
