5-Day Kakadu and Koolpin 4WD Safari

3+ days

Overview

This is a multi-day outback trip for travellers who want more than a quick Kakadu loop. Over five days, you’ll get deeper into the national park by 4WD, with a mix of well-known highlights and harder-to-reach spots, including permit-only Koolpin Gorge. The trip includes rock art at Ubirr, waterfalls and plunge pools at places like Maguk, Gunlom Falls and Moline Rockhole, plus a sunset Yellow Water wildlife cruise. Accommodation is in permanent safari tents on a twin-share basis or a swag, with park fees, Darwin pick-up and guided commentary included.

Why backpackers love it

If you’re in the Top End for a short window but still want a proper Kakadu trip, this covers a lot without needing to organise permits, transport or camping yourself. The Darwin pick-up makes it straightforward, and having park fees, accommodation and guiding bundled in helps with planning. The big draw is the mix of famous Kakadu stops with places many travellers won’t reach independently, especially Koolpin Gorge. It’s not a cheap or low-effort option, but for active backpackers who want remote swimming spots, solid scenery and a few nights in the bush, it packs a lot in.

What to expect

The trip starts with pick-up from your Darwin accommodation before heading into Kakadu by all-terrain vehicle. Across the five days, you’ll visit major cultural and natural sites including Ubirr for its rock art and views over the Nardab floodplains into Arnhem Land, and Warradjan Cultural Centre for more context on the region. There’s a 4WD journey to Jim Jim Falls, a hike through paperbark forest to Maguk for a swim, time at Gunlom Falls, and a visit to Ikoymarrwa (Moline Rockhole). One of the standout days is Jarrangbarnmi, or Koolpin Gorge, a restricted-access area reached on special permit, where you’ll hike and swim. You’ll also do a two-hour Yellow Water sunset cruise focused on wildlife, including crocodiles. Camps have toilets and showers, plus a screened communal area for meals. This trip is physically demanding and suited to travellers with a high level of fitness.
