Litchfield and Daly River Scenic Flight from Darwin
1 to 4 hours
Overview
This is a short scenic flight from Darwin that gives you a much bigger look at Litchfield National Park and the Daly River region than you’d get by road. From the air, you’ll see parts of Litchfield that are hard to reach on land, including waterfalls, wetlands, escarpments and rugged outback country. The route also takes in the Daly River delta and remote coastline before returning via Darwin Harbour. It is a pricier option, but if you want broad aerial views and a time-efficient way to see a lot of Top End landscape in one go, this is the appeal.
Why backpackers love it
If you are short on time but still want to see a lot of the Top End, this covers a huge amount of country in just two hours. The included window seat is a real plus, especially on a sightseeing flight where views matter. It is not a budget activity, but compared with organising multiple stops overland, it is a straightforward way to get a big-picture view of landscapes that are difficult to access otherwise. Free parking and a simple morning schedule also make the planning easy.
What to expect
Check in at Kookaburra Air at 8:30am for a 9:00am departure, then head out on a fixed-wing scenic flight with a window seat included. The flight passes over Darwin River Dam and Rum Jungle Uranium Mine before reaching the Litchfield escarpments. From there, you’ll get aerial views of the Magnetic Termite Mounds, the Cascades, Lost City and several major waterfalls, including Florence, Tjenja, Wangi, Tolmer and Sandy Creek Falls. The route then continues south over crocodile-breeding wetlands along the Daly River and out to the Daly River delta where it meets the sea. You’ll return to Darwin along the remote west coast via Channel Point, Crab Claw Island and Darwin Harbour, landing back around 11:00am.
