3-Day Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon Outback Safari

1 to 3 days

Overview

This three-day outback trip gives you a solid look at the Red Centre without needing to organise transport, camping or park entry yourself. You’ll visit Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon with an accredited driver guide, travel by air-conditioned mini-coach, and stay two nights at permanent campsites. It’s a hands-on camping-style tour rather than a luxury one, with a choice of twin-share safari tents or a traditional swag setup. If you want to cover the big sights in a short timeframe and don’t mind pitching in around camp, it’s a practical way to do it.

Why backpackers love it

For backpackers, the main draw is how much ground it covers in one booking. You get the big Red Centre highlights, transport, accommodation, park pass and guiding bundled together, which makes planning a lot easier in a remote part of Australia. The small-group setup and shared camp tasks can make it easier to meet people, and the choice between a safari tent or swag gives you a bit of flexibility on how rugged you want the trip to feel. Just be aware this is a physically demanding tour with moderate to advanced fitness needed for the walks, so it suits active travellers more than anyone after an easy sightseeing option.

What to expect

Over three days, you’ll travel through the Red Centre in a small group and visit major natural landmarks including Uluru, Kings Canyon and Kata Tjuta, with either the Valley of the Winds or Walpa Gorge included. Guided bush walks are part of the trip, with walks up to 6 to 8 kilometres depending on fitness levels, so expect early starts and a fairly active pace. Commentary from the guide adds context on the landscape, local stories, plants and animals. Nights are spent at permanent outback campsites, and guests are expected to help with meal preparation, clean-up and loading or unloading the vehicle. The tour finishes in Alice Springs, and on select days can also end in Uluru/Ayers Rock/Yulara depending on shuttle availability.
