Hervey Bay Ultimate Whale Watching Cruise

This small-group whale watching cruise heads out from Hervey Bay on a 12-metre rigid inflatable boat built for wildlife viewing. The focus here is less on a standard sightseeing trip and more on understanding humpback whales in one of their key migration rest areas, Platypus Bay. Along the way, you’ll get wide views towards K'gari and commentary from marine scientists who explain whale behaviour and share current research. Soft drinks and snacks are included, and during the main season there is a whale sightings guarantee.

You’ll cruise out in a smaller, purpose-built boat, which means a closer-to-the-water perspective than you’d get on a larger vessel. The route takes you past scenic coastline views towards K'gari before entering the protected waters of Platypus Bay, known as a resting and play area for East Australian humpbacks. On board, marine scientist guides talk through what you’re seeing and how researchers study the whales. One of the more distinctive parts of the trip is the chance to listen to whale songs through underwater hydrophones. Conditions can vary because the tour runs in all weather, so bring suitable clothing. There’s no pick-up or drop-off included, and children under 6 can’t join.
