Split Point Lighthouse Tour
Up to 1 hour
Overview
This is a short self-guided visit inside Split Point Lighthouse, with staff support available at the bottom and top. It’s a good option if you’re already driving the coast and want a quick stop with a bit more substance than just a photo from outside. Once inside, you’ll get panoramic views over Bass Strait and the Southern Ocean, plus some background on lighthouse keepers, shipwreck history and the marine sanctuary below. It’s also the lighthouse known from Round the Twist, which gives it a bit of extra appeal if you grew up with the show.
Why backpackers love it
It’s a simple add-on stop that doesn’t take up half your day or blow the budget. If you’re road-tripping the coast, it gives you a proper look inside one of the region’s best-known landmarks rather than just another quick roadside snap. The self-guided format keeps things easy, and the views, TV connection and maritime history make it feel more interesting than a standard lookout stop. Just be aware this one involves a decent climb, so it’s better suited to travellers comfortable with stairs and tighter spaces.
What to expect
You can explore at your own pace, with most visits taking around 20 to 30 minutes. The experience involves a lighthouse climb, and it’s described as quite strenuous, so you’ll need moderate fitness and proper footwear. It’s not recommended for people with vertigo, claustrophobia, poor cardiovascular health, or pacemakers and similar medical devices due to equipment in the lighthouse. Children need to be at least 5, and kids under 10 must be with an adult. There’s free parking at the end of Federal Street, followed by a short three-minute walk to the lighthouse.
