10-Day Kimberley Offroad Adventure from Broome to Darwin

66 Reviews

10 days

Overview

This is a multi-day overland trip through the Kimberley for travellers who want the outback experience without rushing through it. Starting in Broome and finishing in Darwin, the route heads along the Gibb River Road and includes major highlights such as the Bungle Bungles, Lake Argyle and El Questro. Expect bush camping on most nights, simple camp cooking, plenty of time outdoors, and a mix of hiking, swimming and wildlife spotting. It is a hands-on trip rather than a comfort-focused one, so it suits travellers who are happy camping and have a moderate level of fitness.

Why backpackers love it

For backpackers, the appeal is seeing a huge stretch of remote northern Australia in one organised trip without needing your own 4WD or camping setup. You get transport, gear, water and campsite costs covered, which makes planning a lot easier for a route that is hard to do independently. The bush camping, shared travel and outdoor pace also suit travellers who want a social trip with proper outback scenery rather than hotels and short day tours. At the same time, it is a fairly physical camping tour, so it is better for active travellers than anyone chasing an easy ride.

What to expect

You’ll travel by air-conditioned truck with a driver-guide, heading east from Broome into the heart of the Kimberley. Over 10 days, the trip combines long overland sections with hikes to waterfalls and swimming spots, plus chances to see native animals and ancient Wandjina and Bradshaw rock art. Most nights are spent bush camping, with camping fees, drinking water, and swag and tent equipment included. There is also the option to add extra activities such as a boat ride on Lake Argyle or a helicopter flight over the Bungle Bungles. Selected hotel pick-up and drop-off is included. Keep in mind this is not recommended for pregnant travellers, and all bookings are non-refundable if you cancel.
