Ningaloo Reef Full-Day Kayak and Snorkel Tour

4 hours to 1 day

Overview

This full-day tour gets you out onto the sheltered lagoons and beaches of Ningaloo Reef by sea kayak, with time to snorkel along the way. It is a more active way to see the reef than a standard boat trip, and suits travellers who want to spend a day on the water rather than just ticking off a quick look. You will paddle in a small group with a local guide, keeping an eye out for turtles, rays, schools of fish and coral life, with the chance of seeing dugong between May and July and dolphins at times. Kayaks, paddles, lifejackets, sun shirts, hats and morning tea are included.

Why backpackers love it

If you are in Exmouth for more than a quick stop, this is the kind of day trip that feels like you have properly got out into Ningaloo rather than just looked at it from shore. The small group size keeps it more personal, and having the kayak, snorkel gear, sun protection and snacks included makes planning easier. It is not a cheap budget activity, but for travellers keen on wildlife, paddling and a more hands-on reef day, it packs a lot into one tour.

What to expect

Over roughly eight hours, you will explore Ningaloo’s calm lagoon areas by double sea kayak, stopping at snorkelling spots either from the beach or straight from the kayak. The guide stays with the group throughout and can tailor the day to conditions and the group size, which is usually capped at eight people. Expect plenty of time paddling over clear turquoise water, scanning below for marine life and taking in the contrast between reef, beaches and the range in the background. This is an active day out, so you will need at least moderate fitness. It is not recommended for travellers with poor cardiovascular health, and there is a per-person kayak weight limit of 110kg.
