4-Day Red Centre 4WD Tour from Alice Springs

3+ days

Overview

This four-day 4WD tour packs in some of the Red Centre’s biggest landscapes as well as places many travellers won’t reach on their own. It includes Uluru sunset, time in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, walks around Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon, and stops through the West MacDonnell Ranges before finishing in Alice Springs. You’ll also visit the Uluru-Kata Tjuta Aboriginal Cultural Centre and see sites with long-standing cultural significance, including rock art and sacred waterholes. It suits travellers who want a guided overland trip with a mix of major sights, remote tracks and active days on foot.

Why backpackers love it

If you’re short on time but still want to cover a lot of central Australia, this trip takes care of the transport and route planning for you. It combines the headline stops with less accessible areas that are harder to reach without a 4WD, so you see more than the standard highlights. The guided walks and cultural centre visit give the trip more substance than a simple lookout run, and the Alice Springs finish keeps onward travel straightforward. It’s not a lazy sightseeing coach tour though, so it makes more sense for backpackers who are happy with early starts, walking and a physically active few days.

What to expect

The trip travels by 4WD through central Australia, with selected pick-up points in Alice Springs or Ayers Rock and drop-off in Alice Springs only. Over four days, the route covers Uluru, Kata Tjuta, Watarrka National Park and the West MacDonnell Ranges. Expect guided bush walks and a fairly active pace, including options such as the Valley of the Winds or Walpa Gorge, the Kings Canyon rim walk, and stops at places like Mutitjulu, Kantju Gorge, Standley Chasm, Ormiston Gorge, the Ochre Pits and Ellery Creek Big Hole. If conditions allow, the tour may also travel the Mereenie Loop or Red Centre Way by 4WD. Drinking water is supplied onboard, but you’ll need to bring your own bottle. A bush swag is included if you book the Bush Swag option. A moderate level of fitness is needed, and it’s not recommended for travellers with poor cardiovascular health.
