4-Day Uluru, Kings Canyon and West MacDonnell Tour from Alice Springs

63 Reviews

4 days

Overview

This four-day small group trip packs in some of the Red Centre’s biggest natural highlights in one go. You’ll travel from Alice Springs to Uluru, Kata Tjuta, Kings Canyon and the West MacDonnell Ranges, with guided walks, commentary from an accredited outback guide, and national park passes included. Accommodation is at permanent outback campsites, with a choice of twin-share safari tents or a traditional swag setup.

It’s a good option if you want to cover a lot of ground without organising transport, camping gear and entry fees yourself. Just note that this is a physically demanding tour with bush walks of up to 10 to 12 km, so it suits travellers with a moderate to high level of fitness rather than anyone after a relaxed sightseeing trip.

Free cancellation

If you cancel at least 6 full day(s) before the scheduled departure time, you will receive a full refund. If you cancel between 2 and 6 day(s) before the scheduled departure time, you will receive a 50% refund. If you cancel within 2 day(s) of the scheduled departure, you will receive a 0% refund.

Why backpackers love it

For backpackers who want to see the Red Centre properly, this trip keeps things straightforward. Transport, campsite stays, park passes and guiding are bundled together, which cuts down the planning. The small group format and shared camp jobs also make it easier to meet people, rather than just hopping on and off a coach.

It’s not the cheapest or easiest style of trip, but you do cover a lot in four days and get access to several major landscapes in one booking. The tent or swag choice is a nice touch if you want a more classic outback setup without needing to bring your own camping gear.

What to expect

The tour starts and finishes in Alice Springs. Over four days, you’ll travel by air-conditioned 4WD bus between major Red Centre sites and stop for a mix of scenic lookouts, cultural sites and longer guided walks.

Highlights mentioned include Ormiston Gorge, the Ochre Pits, Ellery Creek Big Hole and Standley Chasm in the West MacDonnell Ranges, plus Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park spots such as Mutitjulu Waterhole, Kuniya Piti and Kantju Gorge. At Kata Tjuta, the itinerary may include the Valley of the Winds or Walpa Gorge, and you’ll also explore Kings Canyon.

Nights are spent at permanent campsites in Uluru, Kings Canyon and the West MacDonnell area. Drinking water is provided on board, but you’ll need to bring your own bottle. There’s also a hands-on group element: travellers are asked to help with meal prep, clean-up and loading or unloading the vehicle.
